Thedatacollectedfromthetelescopeiscomplexandverylarge,makingitalmostimpossibleforanysinglecomputertoprocess.Therefore,SETI@homeutilizesdistributedcomputingtodividethedataintosmallportionsandsendthemtohundredsofthousandsofindividualcomputers.Thesecomputersanalyzethedataandsendtheresultsbacktotheproject'scentralserver,whichthenassemblestheresultsandreportsonanyinterestingsignals.

SETI@homeusesseveraldatastructurestoorganizeandmanagethevastamountofdataitdealswithdaily.Someofthesignificantdatastructuresusedintheprojectinclude:
1.DatabaseStructure
TheSETI@homedatabasestructureisdesignedtofacilitatedataretrievalandanalysis.Itconsistsoftablesthatstoreinformationabouttheproject'svolunteers,workunits,andresults.Thetablesarelinkedtogetherusinguniquekeysforeasyaccesstodata.Thedatabasestructureplaysavitalroleintrackingtheprogressoftheprojectandidentifyingsignalsofinterest.
2.WorkUnitStructure
Theworkunitstructuredefinestheformatofindividualsectionsofdatathataresenttovolunteers'computers.Eachworkunitcontainsaheader,adatablock,andafooter.Theheadercontainsinformationabouttheworkunit,suchasitssizeandlocationinthedatastream.Thedatablockcontainstheactualdatathatneedstobeanalyzed,whilethefootercontainschecksumsandotherimportantinformation.
