Pelicans:TheMajesticBirdsoftheWater
Pelicansarefascinatingcreaturesthathavecapturedtheheartsofbirdenthusiastsforcenturieswiththeiruniquefeaturesandbehaviors.ThesebirdsbelongtothefamilyPelecanidae,whichincludeseightspecies,andarefoundallovertheworld,exceptforthepolarregions.

Pelicansarelargeandheavy-billedwaterbirdsthatweoftenseeflyinginaV-shapedformation.Theyhaveadistinctiveappearance:alongneck,alargehead,andamassivebillthatisconnectedtoapouch.Thispouchcanexpandtoaccommodatelargeamountsofwater,whichtheyusetocatchprey.Pelicanfeathersareoftenwhite,grey,orbrown,andtheirwingspancanstretchuptothreemeters,dependingonthespecies.
Oneoftheuniquefeaturesofpelicansistheirabilitytodivefromgreatheightsintothewatertocatchfish.Theycanreachspeedsof40milesperhourwhilediving,andtheyusetheirwingsasbreakstoreducetheimpactofhittingthewater.Pelicanshavealsobeenobservedswimminginwaterwiththeirwingshalf-opentotrapairbubblesthatmakethemmorebuoyantandhelpthemstayafloat.
HabitatsandDietofPelicans
Pelicansarefoundallovertheworldinvarioushabitats,suchascoastalareas,estuaries,andlakes.Theyaresocialbirdsthatusuallynestinlargecoloniesonthegroundorintrees.Pelicansmateforlife,andbothparentstaketurnsincubatingtheeggsandraisingtheirchicks.
